Arroyo attending Olympic opening, meeting with China’s Hu

To visit quake devastated region

MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will meet Chinese President Hu Jintao to discuss bilateral relations when she goes to Beijing to attend the opening of the Olympic Games, Press Secretary Jesus Dureza said Tuesday.

Arroyo is scheduled to leave for Beijing at dawn Thursday accompanied by a lean delegation to watch the Games? opening ceremonies on August 8 with 80 world leaders, Dureza said.

"Upon the request of the Chinese side, the President will hold a bilateral meeting with President Hu Jintao to discuss bilateral relations," Dureza said.

Her first stop will be in Chengdu in the western Chinese province of Sichuan, which she visited June last year, where she will commiserate with victims of this year?s powerful earthquake.

Arroyo will have lunch with Sichuan provincial officials, and later receive business calls in her hotel at Chengdu before motoring to Dujiangyan, one of the most devastated areas.

In the afternoon on Thursday, the President will fly to Beijing where she will fete Filipino athletes participating in the 29th Olympics with a dinner at the Asia Hotel Beijing.

On her last day, on August 9, Arroyo will tour the Olympic Village and have lunch with the Filipino community before flying home in the evening.
