MANILA, Philippines -- Former First Lady Imelda Marcos on Friday said the US Supreme Court ruling on a disputed $35-million account in favor of the government was also a ?complete vindication of the Marcos truth.?
The American high tribunal overruled an earlier decision by an appeals court siding with victims of human rights violations under the 14-year dictatorship of the late Ferdinand Marcos, therefore effectively transferring resolution of the dispute over the money, held in escrow, to the Philippines.
?Thank God that once more, truth and justice have prevailed,? Ms. Marcos said in an emailed statement.
The first time it happened, Ms. Marcos said, was in what she called the "trial of the century" in New York in 1990, where she was found not guilty on charges of racketeering, mail fraud, obstruction and conspiracy.
?And now, this victory in a Federal Supreme Court in Washington is a complete vindication of the Marcos truth,? she said.
However, she also lamented ?22 years of relentless persecution, trials and deprivation? that she said ?have inflicted so much pain and suffering for the Marcos family, caused by not-so-nice people in America.?
?The American justice system works. God Bless America,? she said.
