MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has named Silvestre Bello III as the new Secretary to the Cabinet, her spokesman Ignacio Bunye announced Tuesday.
Bello, the presidential assistant for new government centers, will assume his new post when Ricardo Saludo is confirmed by the Commission on Appointments as the new chairperson of the Civil Service Commission, Bunye said.
Bello's appointment is part of the ongoing revamp in Arroyo's Cabinet, which the President said would happen in the next few months.
On Sunday, Bunye announced that he would be joining the Monetary Board starting June 22. Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano was given a concurrent post as head of the Philippine Tourism Authority replacing Robert Dean Barbers.
Prior to his new appointment, Bello was the general manager and chief executive officer of the Philippine Reclamation Authority from January-December 2006 and president and chief executive officer of Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC)-Development and Management Corp.
He was also the chairman of the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) panel for talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front (CPP-NPA-NDF) from 2001-2004.
He held the justice secretary portfolio for almost three years and served as solicitor-general from 1996 to 1998.
