MANILA, Philippines -- The Manila City Government has allowed militants to hold their mass protest on May 1 at the Don Chino Roces Bridge (formerly Mendiola Bridge) but under certain conditions.

In Tuesday's meeting with militants, acting Mayor Isko Moreno said members of the Kilusang Mayo Uno and Partidong Manggagawa could hold their activities provided they clean up after their program and that they should not force themselves to go beyond the police precinct in Mendiola.

"Clean the area after your program. Take your trash with you and police your ranks," Moreno said.

Manila Police District (MPD) Chief Roberto Rosales proposed that the militants have up to 6 p.m. to hold their programs, which the militant leaders agreed to.

The program in Mendiola will start at 3:30 p.m., the militants said.

Meanwhile, National Capital Region Police Office Chief Geary Barias said from 2,500 to 3,000 members of the police and military would be stationed in the area.

"The NCR command has committed to 400 personnel to assist us...The military will be a contingent support," Barias said.

"We will adhere to our basic policy that there will be no guns," he said.
