MANILA, Philippines -- You know it's summer when you see women clad only in bikinis.

But hey, they’re in the middle of a crowded street in Manila. And they’re wearing no ordinary bikinis -- they’re made from fresh lettuce.

The popular salad ingredient was worn by women from animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to urge people to go vegan.

Three girls -- all models -- were mobbed by media and bystanders as they stood in the middle of Plaza Miranda in Quiapo, Friday noon.

The three girls were models Katrina Lugartos, Istara Bon Gundry from us, and Ashley Fruno from Canada.

PETA urged the public to “save the planet, go vegetarian.”

“Meat production actually produces more greenhouses gases than car emissions,” said Rochelle Regodon, PETA campaigns manager.

“With so many delicious alternatives to meat now available, it's easier than ever to enjoy great food while saving animals and the planet,” said lettuce lady Ashley Fruno.

Police immediately dispersed the crowds and the models saying PETA had no permit.

Another police officer said: “At least not here near the church.”
