MANILA, Philippines -- The former Philippine ambassador to the Holy See expressed optimism that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines would “read the signs of the times well” as the bishops convened in an emergency meeting Tuesday to discuss the country’s political crisis.
Henrietta “Tita” de Villa, who is also chairperson of the Parish Pastoral Council for Pastoral Voting, said she had no idea what would happen during the bishops’ meeting.
“I know the Holy Spirit will guide them,” De Villa said shortly before she flew to Rome Tuesday to assume her new designation as member of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, a Vatican instrumentality that addresses the needs of the poor worldwide.
CBCP President and Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo called the Permanent Council, together with other bishops, to an emergency consultative meeting at the Pius XII Catholic Center in Manila to try to forge a common stand on the broadband scandal, including calls for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to resign.
