Razon says police remain loyal to Arroyo

MANILA, Philippines--Policemen will also be present at EDSA to ensure security and not to join calls for the ouster of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

At the same time, Police Director General Avelino Razon reiterated his support for Arroyo.

"The PNP remains united and loyal behind the Constitution and the duly constituted authorities. Our Chain of Command is inviolable and respected by all personnel," said Razon in a statement Sunday.

"Suggestions of political intervention by the police and military are totally uncalled for, and is seen as an insult to members of the police and military as dignified professionals," said Razon.

"We in the PNP will not get ourselves involved in politics, much less in political intervention in the affairs of the state," he added.

Razon lamented that "some quarters are now commemorating the EDSA revolt in an entirely different political theme" as anti-Arroyo groups are expected to converge in various areas to urge Arroyo to resign.

"The PNP will be at EDSA to ensure that the people will be able to celebrate the occasion peacefully and without fear of crime and lawlessness. Anything outside of that task is already beyond our mandate," he said.
