MANILA, Philippines – Aside from guarding against car thieves, the Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group will also secure public modes of transportation for the Holy Week, a police spokesman said Friday.

Senior Superintendent Edwin Butacan, HPG spokesman, said that 90% of the 1,400-strong HPG force would be deployed to check bus terminals, jeepneys and vans in Metro Manila. They will start inspections Monday, when most commuters are expected to start going home for the Holy Week.

Butacan warned those planning on driving their own vehicles against overspeeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, using cellular phones, feeling sleepy as these have caused accidents on the road. He also advised motorists to plan their routes, bring tools for emergencies, and avoid isolated areas and hitchhikers.

The HPG spokesman warned bus operators against overloading and advised them to check the conditions of the engines, tires and brakes.

The HPG, Butacan stated, would be coordinating with various agencies like the Land Transportation Office (LTO), Department of Transportation and Communication (DoTC), and the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).
