MANILA, Philippines?Eight persons were hurt on Thursday as a demolition team tried, for the second day, to clear a 7,000-square meter lot at the corner of Broadway Avenue and 7th Street in Barangay Marianas, Quezon City.

Several pillbox explosions occurred as residents stood their ground behind a makeshift barricade to protect their shanties, according to Superintendent Edgardo Pamittan, commander of the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) Station 11.

?Intermittent pillbox explosions in the area resulted in the injury of six laborers and two members of the Special Weapons and Tactics team,? Pamittan said.

He added that the police found at least 20 more improvised explosives in some of the houses.

The other day, 11 persons were hurt, including three media men and a policeman, as a court sheriff went to the area to implement a court order for the clearing of the area.

Some 200 families live on the privately owned lot.

?We need more police assistance to implement the order because of the violent resistance we are encountering from informal settlers in the area,? Pamittan said.

He added that members of QCPD anti-bomb squad had been called in to assist in the recovery of pillboxes.

Photographers covering the demolition on Thursday were wearing combat helmets and vests after three media men were injured on Wednesday.

Pamittan said the demolition of shanties in the area was based on an order issued by Quezon City Regional Trial Court Branch 97 Judge Bernelito Fernandez.

Residents, however, said the order was illegal because of a pending motion to quash the judge?s order which has been scheduled for hearing on Friday.
