MANILA, Philippines -- Manila policemen have been directed to arrest those who will fire their guns and burn tires during the New Year celebrations.
The Manila Police District director, Chief Supt. Rodolfo Magtibay, gave the order even as he urged the public to take safe means of greeting the New Year.
"Burning tires is prohibited and we will arrest people who will burn rubber. This is bad for the environment and it obstructs traffic. I have ordered our policemen to arrest anyone who will burn rubber in the middle of streets," Magtibay told Inquirer.
He said the MPD has also launched an information campaign to ensure safety during the yearend celebrations.
"Mobile cars and patrols will help local officials disseminate information to warn people about the use of firecrackers, tires and guns," said,
Magtibay led the sealing of muzzles of Manila policemen's firearms.
