MANILA, Philippines -- A world-class track oval inaugurated at the University of Makati (UMak) on Sunday will be open to city residents and non-residents looking for more venues to exercise.
Makati mayor Jejomar Binay, who led the launch with former President Joseph Estrada, said the public would be welcome to use the newly built 1,500-meter oval.
"We may charge a minimum fee for the maintenance," said Binay of the P30-million oval, which had eight lanes measuring 1.2 meters each, a two-meter warm-up lane and a two-meter wide promenade.
The mayor said UMak was the first local university to have its own track and field oval that conformed to international standards. The facility would be used to hone local athletes and host national and international sporting events.
Aside from catering to runners, the Makati Oval have baseball/softball court, shot-put area, two long jump and triple jump areas, two hammer and discus throw areas, water jump area, pole vault area, and javelin throw area. The covered gallery, meanwhile, could seat 3,000 people.
Estrada on Sunday hailed the track oval as "world-class" and said the youth of Makati were lucky to benefit greatly from it.
"Pinag-iingat ng inyong mayor ang lahat hanggang sa kaisa-isang sentimo napupunta sa kapakanan ng bayan. Lahat ng mga proyekto ng Makati nakikita natin ang kanyang malasakit. Hindi lamang yun pati na yung pag-aalaga niya sa mga tao ng Makati, lalo na ang mga kabataan (The mayor faithfully accounts for the city?s funds up to the last centavo and makes sure the city?s money goes to the benefit of the city. We can see his concern and care in every project in Makati. That?s not all, we also see how he cares for the people of the Makati, especially the youth)," he said in a speech after a ceremonial run with Binay.
