MANILA, Philippines?A policeman was shot dead when another policeman allegedly engaged the latter and his partner in a shootout in the village of Baesa, Quezon City, early Tuesday a report said.
Chief Inspector Benjamin Elenzano, chief of the homicide investigation section of the Quezon City Police District, identified the fatalities as P02 Joaquin Angid of the QCPD Station 3 and suspect SP01 Hassan Baharan, 49, assigned at the National Capital Regional Police Office in Bicutan.
Wounded was Angid?s partner, P02 Ayub Abdullah, also from QCPD Station 3.
QCPD director Chief Supt. Elmo San Diego had recommended a posthumous award for Angid, and a promotion for Abdullah, who was recuperating in hospital.
Elenzano said Angid and Abdullah were about to arrest Baharan for allegedly killing his teenaged girlfriend, when the suspect fired at the two officers as they alighted from their patrol car at around 12:40 a.m. Tuesday along Tandang Sora Avenue, Barangay Baesa.
Baharan had reportedly shot dead his 16-year-old girlfriend, Nina Ramos, during the wake of the girl?s brother on Mendez Road, also in Barangay Baesa.
Elenzano said Angid and Abdullah were sent to investigate the killing when they saw Baharan on board a tricycle and tried to stop him.
But instead of yielding to the policemen, Baharan fired at them, Elenzano said.
Angid was killed on the spot.
PO2 Norlan Margallo, officer on case, said Ramos had tried to pacify a drunken Baharan when he picked a fight with a group of people playing "sakla" during the wake.
Baharan, who was in uniform at the time, suddenly pulled out his service gun and pointed the weapon at the girl, who dared the suspect to shoot her, police said.
Ramos was dead on the spot, police said.
