Fetus found in fastfood comfort room

MANILA, Philippines—The body of a 2-month-old fetus was discovered inside the comfort room of a fastfood restaurant in Manila Thursday evening.

PO3 Jay Santos of the Manila Police District homicide section said the fetus’ mother could have taken abortive medicine and happened to be in the restaurant when she experienced labor pains.

Santos revealed that the fetus, which was inside a toilet bowl, was initially discovered by security guard Michael Awitan at the Juan Luna fastfood restaurant branch at 721 Kedar Building on CM Recto Avenue, Tondo around 7:30 p.m.

He said when Awitan inspected the unisex comfort room of the store, he noticed red stains on the toilet bowl. Suspecting it was blood, he informed store manager Billy Baltazar who immediately went to the restroom.

Baltazar noticed a bloody mass lodged inside the toilet bowl and poked it with a stick. It was then that they discovered the fetus.

“It was not unintentionally aborted. The mother could have taken abortive drugs and had not expected to expel the fetus at that moment,” the case investigator told the Inquirer.

He said before the discovery, Awitan had not noticed any restaurant patron acting suspiciously. “The restaurant was full of diners at that time and he (security guard) did not see anything out of the ordinary,” Santos said.

The fetus was brought to the Cruz Funeral Homes for safekeeping.
