MANILA, Philippines?Biking your way to school or work in Metro Manila? Are you crazy?
Of course many road mishaps in the capital region involve motorbikes. But the Light Rail Transit Authority has something in mind.
A green one.
On Sunday, the LRTA will launch the ?Bike On, Bike Off (BIKE-O2) Project.? Cyclists can bring their bikes on board the trains.
The last coach of the trains will be designated as ?green zones? to carry cyclists and their bikes, LRTA public information officer Maria Kristina Cassion said.
The project, she said, aims to encourage car users to leave their vehicles at home and use the train instead. But they can bringing along their bikes and pedal their way to their destination.
It is a combination of two eco-friendly modes of transportation that will help curb traffic congestion and carbon emission, Cassion said. At the same time, it changes the way car owners and commuters get around places, this time in a more healthy way.
The project will be launched in both the LRTA?s Line 1 (Baclaran to Monumento) and Line 2 (Recto-Santolan) systems.
?With this project, the LRTA will be the very first in the country to implement this environment-friendly mode of traveling, while continuing to provide a safe, reliable and efficient mass transport system,? Cassion said.
