MANILA, Philippines—The chief engineer of Pasay City ordered the temporary closure of a roller coaster inside the Star City theme park in Pasay City, on Monday, after it reportedly stalled by accident Sunday night.
Edwin Javaluyas, chief of the City Engineering Office, said he directed the management of Star City to temporarily stop the operations of the Zyclone Loop pending a safety inspection on the amusement ride by his men on Tuesday.
"I dispatched a team from my office to look into the safety of the ride and see if it had any mechanical defects," Javaluyas said in a mobile phone interview.
He said a report from the security division of the theme park did not indicate that a mechanical problem caused the ride to suddenly stop about 8:40 p.m. Sunday.
Citing theme park's officials, he said one of the 12 occupants of the roller coaster inadvertently dropped a shoulder bag, which got stuck on the steel wheels of the ride.
"From what we initially gathered, the ride did not suffer mechanical defect, which might cause it to stop. But just the same, we will conduct an inspection tomorrow (Tuesday)," he said.
Javaluyas said the management of the theme park assured him that no one was injured in the incident.
A report from the Pasay police said 12 customers were suspended on top of the looping rail of the roller coaster for several minutes before a rescue team was able to bring them down safely.
Senior Supt. Raul Petrasanta, city police chief, said on Monday they had yet to receive any complaint regarding the incident, adding that he ordered a separate investigation to find out what could have caused the sudden stalling of the roller coaster.
Early this year, a man died after he accidentally fell from another roller coaster of Star City.
