MANILA, Philippines ? A 20-year-old third year nursing student was found dead inside his room Saturday evening in Quezon City, in an apparent suicide, police said.
Police Officer 3 Norlan Margallo, of the Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit identified the victim as Jonathan Montemayor, a nursing student of Trinity College.
Police said the victim was discovered hanging inside the second floor room he shared with his sister, at No. 29 V. Luna Extension, in Malaya village.
Investigation showed that an electric cord was looped around his neck with one end tied to a steel beam at the ceiling.
Police said the victim's body was discovered by his sister at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.
Police learned that the victim previously attempted to commit suicide after he was forced to stop his studies and he found himself burdened with the responsibilities of taking care of an ailing mother.
The family told police that the victim tried to overdose with pills, but was brought to the hospital.
Police said that on Saturday, the relatives of the victim rushed him to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center after he was found, but he was declared dead on arrival.
In a statement to the police, the family said, they last saw Montemayor alive at around 10 a.m. Saturday.
