MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) A businessman was hurt and his driver killed in an attempted robbery in broad daylight in Caloocan City Monday, police said.
Case investigator Police Officer 3 Julian Chavez said businessman Arnel David had just withdrawn an unidentified amount of money in a bank located in General Luis Street in Kaybiga at around 8 a.m. when the incident occurred.
Initial investigation revealed that after withdrawing money, David boarded his vehicle with his driver, Bernas Nixon. As they were leaving, two suspects on board a motorcycle approached their vehicle and, at gunpoint, demanded money.
When David was about to get his wallet in his pants back pocket, both suspects fired at David and Nixon.
“The suspects assumed that David was drawing a gun, that’s why they shot at them,” Chavez said.
Nixon died of a lone gunshot wound on his thigh, Chavez said.
Meanwhile, David sustained gunshot wounds on his feet and is now undergoing treatment at the Chinese General Hospital.
The suspects immediately fled towards the area of Quezon City after the incident, Chavez said.
