MANILA, Philippines? Two hundred closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will soon be installed by the Philippine National Police (PNP) around possible Metro Manila terrorist targets, in the wake of the deadly and near-simultaneous bombings of two high-end hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia on Friday.
Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno told reporters at the Kapihan sa Sulo forum in Quezon City yesterday that the CCTVs would be set up around ?soft targets,? including hotels, malls, theaters and transport terminals.
?The cameras will be monitored from police headquarters at Camp Crame to ensure constant surveillance of these establishments,? he said.
Puno said the police have also stepped up intelligence gathering and would be getting more dog sniffers to detect explosives. Motorists should also expect more checkpoints set up in the metropolis, he added.
?For the moment, I think the public can rest assured that both the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces are up to the challenge of keeping them safe,? Puno said. Leila B. Salaverria
