Government work, classes suspended in NCR

MANILA, Philippines? (UPDATE 2) Malacaang announced Friday morning the suspension of work in all government offices in the National Capital Region (or Metro Manila) due to heavy rains brought about by Storm ?Isang? (international codename: Molave).

?We are suspending work in view of the flooding and continuous rain, and in view of the recommendation of the Office of Civil Defense and the National Disaster Coordinating Council,? Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said in a phone interview.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita issued the order at past 8 a.m., he said.

Apart from Metro Manila, Malacaang also suspended work in government offices in provinces under Signal No. 1 and 2, as well as in provinces experiencing heavy rains, Remonde said.

Provinces under Signal No. 1 were Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, Benguet, Mt. Province, Pangasinan, La Union, and Ilocos Sur, and provinces while under Signal No. 2 were Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra and Ilocos Norte.

The suspension of work in government offices was also expanded to include Pampanga, Tarlac, Nueva Ecija, Bataan and Zambales, as well as a Cavite, Laguna and Batangas, according to Remonde.

Earlier, Education Secretary Jesli Lapus announced the suspension of classes in pre-school, elementary and high school levels in public and private schools in Metro Manila.
