MANILA, Philippines--A fire that struck a restaurant owned by actor Marvin Agustin in a posh Makati mall caused panic among customers on Saturday night after smoke quickly spread throughout the area.
The blaze, which hit Sumo-Sam restaurant in Power Plant Mall in Rockwell Center at 7:35 p.m., reached only the first alarm but took almost six hours to extinguish.
Property damage was placed at P100,000 since only the kitchen and ceiling of the restaurant owned by actor Marvin Agustin were burnt.
Two other establishments?California Pizza Kitchen and C2 Classic Kitchen?were also partly damaged by water pumped in the area.
Two persons were slightly hurt in the fire.
Firefighter SFO1 Dominador Rubio had a laceration on the right elbow while restaurant cook ?Mike? had to be treated for chemical inhalation.
SFO1 Gerson Moncada of the Makati fire department said initial investigation showed that a spark occurred in the kitchen area of the restaurant on the mall's second floor.
Embers began scattering throughout the main duct area of the mall, thus causing smoke to come out of the exhaust windows.
Mall-goers immediately scampered outside for safety, according to Moncada.
He said firefighters led by ground commander, Chief Insp. Samuel Tadeo, had difficulty putting out the fire because the duct sections had to be opened.
