Quezon City gravel pit road renamed

MANILA, Philippines—A road in Payatas which connects quarry areas in Rizal to Quezon City has been recently renamed Payatas Road.

In an ordinance signed by city mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr., the Manila Gravel Pit Road or Litex Road which connects the village of Payatas in Quezon City and Rodriguez, Rizal will now be known as Payatas Road.

“It is about time that we rename this road. And for that, there would be no other fitting name than the area it represents—Payatas,” Belmonte explained.

In the ordinance, city councilor Antonio Inton Jr. said the Manila Gravel Pit Road may have gotten its name from quarry areas in Montalban, now Rodriguez, Rizal.

He pointed out that the area is now a full grown community of 100,000 residents and that the old street is now a busy road which deserves “a more appropriate name for the community it belongs.”

The ordinance added that the road’s name has long outlived its significance as the community is no longer known as a quarry place or as a textile plant in the case of Litex Road.

“History is likewise served because the whole area serviced by this road was once part of the Payatas Estate, one of the major components of what is now Quezon City,” the three-page measure read.

The ordinance also mandated that the old name “Manila Gravel Pit Road” should be indicated at the bottom of the signage “Payatas Road” for two years, in order to avoid confusion in postal matters.

Belmonte signed the measure on March 5 to coincide with the 33rd founding anniversary of Barangay Payatas.

It was co-authored by Inton and 19 other city councilors. The Quezon City council is authorized under the 1991 Local Government Code to rename roads, avenues, boulevards, and bridges within its territory after consulting with the Philippine Historical Commission.
