MANILA, Philippines?A 10-year-old student of the Ateneo elementary school was killed while his nanny was injured when a van hit them on the university?s parking lot in Katipunan, Quezon City, on Tuesday afternoon.
Superintendent Rudie Valoria, head of the Quezon City Police District Traffic Enforcement Unit said a Toyota van (CRW-705) driven by one Ma. Theresa Torres, 37, interior designer and resident of Charbel Executive Village in Mindanao Avenue was involved in the accident.
Valoria said Torres surrendered to the police and has been in custody since then, and would be charged with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injury.
He identified the fatality as Julian Carlo Miguel Alcantara, 10, and the nanny as Tata Suarez, 65.
The boy, Valoria said, was declared dead on arrival at the New Era Hospital an hour after the accident took place. He died of head injuries.
Suarez was injured in the ankles and shins and was treated at the school infirmary.
The boy's brother, sister and an unidentified friend who were with the victim at the time of the accident were unharmed.
Based on witnesses' accounts, the accident happened at around 4 p.m., during dismissal time.
Witnesses said the victims were nearing their van with plate number XGT-909 when Torres? speeding van, hit and ran over the boy. Torres? vehicle also collided with a KIA van and smashed into a CRV-Honda, before it stopped.
"The victims? car was parked ahead of the victim when it suddenly moved and hit them,'' witnesses said.
Another witness said that the other victims were not hit, because Suarez was able to push them all to the side, except for the slain boy.
"Hindi niya naabot yung bata, kasi nasa dulo na, pero nasagasaan din sya (She was not able to get to the boy because he was at the end of the line, but she was also hit),'' a witness narrated.
Witnesses said they had to lift the van to take out the boy from under the vehicle and brought him to the nearest hospital.
"Others parents who witnessed the accident could also be in shock, because it took a while before another mother volunteered to take the boy in her car and bring him to the hospital,'' a witness who asked not to be identified said.
Valoria said it was possible that Torres stepped on the wrong pedal, instead of the brakes.
"Maybe as she was moving forward, she was shocked to see the two already in front. But maybe, instead of stepping on the brakes, she stepped on the accelerator," Valoria said.
Based on the narration of the events by the school's management issued through a statement, the victim, Suarez, his sister Jana, and his Grade 7 brother Javier, their driver, and his brother's friend, exited from the Ateneo elementary school main gate towards their parked vehicle, at around 3:45 p.m.
It said that at about the same time, the vehicle driven by Torres was situated at the side of the University Physical Plant Office along the garage area which is near the entrance of the inner driveway gate.
It further said that Torres' driver alighted from the vehicle and she took over the wheel.
The police said the vehicle accelerated and hit the boy and then Suarez and two other vehicles.
The Ateneo Grade School, through its headmaster Fr. Norberto Bautista and the Ateneo de Manila University, through its president Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, expressed their deep sorrow and condolences to the family of the victim.
It said that Amiel, the victim's nickname and son of Pepe Alcantara, was a valiant and responsible Boy Scout and a friend to many students.
He had just completed the challenging year-end camp in Bolinao, Pangasinan, on February 20-22 with nary a complaint, in spite of his asthmatic condition, according to his scoutmasters Ruth Senga and Raymund Gubat.
The Ateneo assured the school community that a proper and thorough investigation of the accident has been launched, and that counselling assistance has been provided to the affected families and students.
Masses and prayers are also being offered all over campus for the repose of the soul of Amiel, whose remains lie in state at the Chapel of the Holy Guardian Angels at the Ateneo Grade School. As a final tribute to Amiel, the AGS Boy Scouts will forego their scheduled pass in review on Thursday and instead, hold a mass for their fellow scout.
The Ateneo administration requested the media to respect the privacy of the parties involved in the tragic accident, and of members of the school community saddened by Amiel's sudden demise, during this time of prayer and mourning.
Parents of the school children were shocked by the accident, but offered varied reactions to the accident inside the campus.
"The school accepts so many students that they should also take responsibility for them and should order the guards to implement more stringent safety measures,'' a parent of grade 1 and 4 pupil said.
Another parent called on other parents to be more careful and avoid delegating the job of fetching their kids from school. He called on the school management to have a more organized parking system.
"We pay a fine of P2,000 every time a car's left unattended that hampers the flow of traffic during dismissal time,'' a parent said.
