MANILA, Philippines -- As millions are expected to flock to Quiapo Church Friday for the feast of the Black Nazarene, tons of street vendors are also expected to peddle their wares, particularly street food, to the devotees.
That’s why the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) warned against possible food poisoning over street food.
“Tomorrow is the feast of the Black Nazarene. Let us not forget the sacrifices of Our Lord and let us not forget the food and drink safety reminders of the Red Cross,” said PNRC Chairman Senator Richard Gordon in a statement.
But Gordon assured that PNRC medical volunteers and first aid stations will be available in the vicinity of Quiapo Church Friday to provide medical assistance to those who need them.
A total of 250 volunteers, two ambulances, and several mobile first aid stations will be deployed by the PNRC, Gordon said.
The PNRC is also in close coordination with the Department of Health, Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Patrol 117, Manila Health Department, Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Air Force. Many Fire and rescue volunteer groups will be sending ambulances and fire trucks to the Quiapo fiesta.
PNRC mobile first aid stations will be in place at Prudential Bank Building in Plaza Sta. Cruz, the corner of Palanca and Villalobos Streets, and the 7-11 Convenience Store beside Quiapo Church along Quezon Boulevard.
Meanwhile, Dr. Cecilia Francisco, PNRC-Community Health and Nursing Service (CHNS) manager, said those who would fall victim to food poisoning should rehydrate themselves through an intravenous line or by drinking fluids.
"You may need to be admitted to the hospital. This depends on the severity of the dehydration, your response to therapy, and your ability to drink fluids without vomiting. Children, in particular, may need close observation,” Francisco added.
In a television interview, National Capital Region police office (NCRPO) Director Leopoldo Bataoil said that apart from the 500 policemen deployed by the Manila Police District (MPD), another 300 policemen from the Regional Mobile Group (RMG) will be deployed to provide security to the devotees during the feast of the Black Nazarene.
