MANILA, Philippines—Two pedestrians trying to cross the street died after being run over by speeding vehicles in separate accidents in Quezon City on Sunday night.

The first victim, Nemecio Canda, 42, died while undergoing treatment at the East Avenue Medical Center for multiple injuries all over his body.

Canda, a resident of Sta Cruz, Laguna, was trying to cross the Commonwealth Avenue in front of Central Avenue at around 5:05 p.m. when a Hino Bus ran over him.

A certain Wilfredo Polvoriza, 32, was driving the Hino Bus with plate number TXG 921 bound for Fairview.

Case investigator Police Officer 3 Venus Ormita said the front right side of the bus hit Canda just as he was crossing the road.

Meanwhile, another pedestrian also died after he was hit by an SUV just as he was crossing the Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue at around 11 p.m.

The victim has not been identified but was described as male, in his mid 20s, about 5'5” in height and of medium build.

Traffic investigator Police Officer 3 Perlito Datu said the man was wearing a brown shirt and sported a military style haircut.

He identified the driver of the BMW wagon, a certain Patricia Olbes, 47, of Legaspi St, Makati City.

Police are mulling possible charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide against the driver of the bus. No charges have been filed against Olbes.

Superintendent Norberto Babagay, TEU chief, noted that hit-and-run accidents involving pedestrians crossing EDSA have been rare due to the establishment of MRT, but they were common along Commonwealth Ave.

“We remind drivers to drive safely and responsibly, and for pedestrians to always take note of the signs, 'Bawal tumawid, nakamamatay' (Don’t cross, you might die) as this could save their life,” the police official added.
