MANILA, Philippines--(UPDATE) An out-of-control six-wheeled truck rammed into a coffee shop after hitting several cars parked in front of the establishment along Katipunan Avenue at around 5 p.m. on Sunday, a police official said.
Chief Insp. Romeo Arcenas said five people were injured as the truck hit a Volvo car driven by one Dino Pastrano and a motorcycle before it rammed into the coffee shop.
Arcenas said the truck then hit a Ford ranger, a Honda CRV, and two Starex vans parked in front of Bo's Café.
The motorcycle driver who was sandwiched by the truck and the Volvo was brought to a hospital at Project 4, while the others who were customers of the café were reportedly brought to other hospitals.
Based on an initial investigation, Arcenas said the truck suddenly accelerated and the driver lost control.
Police said the Quezon City Police District Station 9 had custody of the driver as of Sunday afternoon.
Pisero, in a telephone interview with the Philippine Daily Inquirer, said his brakes malfunctioned.
"Nasira yung preno ng truck kaya kinabig ko sa kaliwa at tumama sa Volvo na halos kasabay ko papunta sa UP,'' Pisero told Inquirer. (The brakes malfunctioned and I tried to steer the truck to the left but the truck hit the Volvo, which was also going towards UP.)
Pisero said he surrendered to a barangay (village) volunteer, who brought him to the Police Station 9, to avoid being mauled by irate victims and bystanders.
