MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATE) Seven students (not nine as police earlier reported) of the University of the Philippines who were taken in for questioning after they staged a protest against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Friday morning have been turned over to the school’s police force.

Police Officer 1 Mylene Cabon of the Quezon City Police Department Station 9 said no charges have been filed against the students, belying earlier claims by activists.

Cabon said the students were immediately handed over to the UP police.

Divs Mosquera, member of the League of Filipino Students, said the seven students were released early Friday afternoon.

The seven, along with other protesters, staged a rally during the inauguration of the UP-Ayala Land Technical Hub on Commonwealth Avenue, at which Arroyo was guest of honor.
