Makati public markets turn 'green'

MANILA, Philippines--Ten Makati public markets will turn "green" Friday with the city government's "Palit-Ilaw" caravan, which will replace all incandescent bulbs with efficient compact flourescent lights (CFLs).

Department of Environmental Services chief Danilo Villas said they will turn over 20-watt CFLs and 36-watt T8 flourescent lamps to the administrators of Bangkal market, Palanan market, Pio del Pilar market, Poblacion public market, Sacramento market, Tejeros market, Comembo market, Comembo Commercial Complex, Guadalupe Commercial Market and Kalayaan Market.

The energy-efficient project was in line with Makati's campaign to reduce greenhouse emissions that contribute to global warming, he said.

"We are glad that we have successfully expanded out Palit-Ilaw project, which aims to enhance Makati's energy-saving program, as well as its campaign for a healthy environment through the aggressive promotion of the use of energy-efficient lightings throughout the city," said Villas.

The city government signed last year a memorandum of agreement with the Department of Energy to use and promote energy-efficient lighting.

Upon the directive of Mayor Jejomar Binay, the five-story old City Hall's incandescent lamps have already been replaced while the project is still in progress at the new City Hall.

Villas said the "Palit-Ilaw" caravan, in partnership with Philips Electronics and Lighting, will soon target the city's public schools, village halls, health centers and sports facilities.
