MANILA, Philippines—A missing cell phone is being eyed as key to the killing of an ice cream vendor whose body was found on Tuesday morning.
Superintendent Moises Mabanag, Criminal Investigation and Detective Unit of the Quezon City Police District, identified the victim as Arnel Canete, 32, a live-in worker at Ramos St., Krus na Ligas, Quezon City.
Mabanag said they were looking for Canete’s co-worker, Dexter Lopez, 32, who has not been seen since the victim’s body was found.
The police said that prior to the killing, Lopez and Canete were at the village headquarters to settle a dispute over Canete’s missing cell phone. Canete accused Lopez of stealing his cell phone.
"Apparently, the confrontation in the barangay did not settle their differences over the missing cell phone,'' the police official said.
Based on an initial investigation, he said, Canete and Lopez argued during a drinking session where the issue of the missing cell phone was brought up.
He said Canete died from multiple stab wounds and was found outside a hardware area on Tuesday at 7 a.m., hours after their dispute was supposedly settled at the barangay office.
Police were trying to locate Lopez for questioning.
