Taguig allocates land for new cemetery

MANILA, Philippines—The Taguig city government announced it has allocated a parcel of land for its newest public cemetery, hoping it would be at par with upscale memorial parks in the city.

Taguig Mayor Freddie Tinga, in a statement, assured the city's residents that once Serenity Park goes into full operation, a decent burial for their departed loved ones need not be expensive.

“Losing a loved one is already painful but what’s worse is when one can’t give a proper burial due to financial difficulties,” Tiñga said in the statement. “With this new public cemetery, we help ease their pain.”

He added that the memorial park, which will be built on a 1.5-hectare lot in Barangay Hagonoy, will be patterned after the high-end Heritage Park at Fort Bonifacio.

It would have about six structures, which can accommodate 2,300 bodies, for crypts with “apartment-type” slots for caskets.

Tinga added that a columbarium for cremated remains would also be constructed.

When completed, he said the Serenity Park could hold about 15,000 remains.

The park will also feature private viewing chapels and offer low-cost funeral services, he said.

Serenity Park, which will be inaugurated on Nov. 30, will be open for public viewing Saturday.
