MANILA, Philippines -- The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) will start hearing on Tuesday the petition for a fare rollback filed by a commuter's group, chairman Thompson Lantion said on Monday.

The National Council for Commuter's Protection Inc., led by its president Elvira Medina, filed the petition on September 20 seeking to bring down basic public transport rates to P7.50 for jeepneys, P8 for ordinary buses, and P10 for air-conditioned buses, saying the continuous decline in local oil prices justified the rollback.

The current fare is P8.50 jeepneys, P10 for ordinary buses, and P12 for air-conditioned buses.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the LTFRB main office on East Avenue, Quezon City.

Stakeholders expected to attend the hearing include Consumer and Oil Price Watch chairperson Raul Concepcion, a representative from the Office of the Solicitor General, and different transport groups.

Last week, the jeepney drivers and operators’ group Pasang Masda said it intended to file a counter-petition to the fare rollback.

Pasang Masda president Obet Martin said they are willing to bring down their minimum fare to P7.50 if diesel prices go down to P37-39 a liter.
