MANILA, Philippines—If you ever get the feeling of being watched while on the streets of Quezon City, there is a big chance that you are.
The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) is eyeing to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras in busy intersections around the city in a bid to curb crime.
QCPD Director Senior Superintendent Magtanggol Gatdula said that the initial plan is to set up 50 security cameras, estimated to cost the local government P49 million, around the locality.
“But it (P49 million) is too big. We understand that we are not only the priority of the city government,” Gatdula told the Philippine Daily Inquirer adding, “Just 10 or 15 cameras will do for the meantime.” A unit, he explained, is priced at around P300,000.
He pointed out that should the bidding for the purchase of the cameras under the government procurement laws proceed without hitches, the units could be installed before the end of the year.
“The various business clubs and establishments could also help us out,” the QCPD Director said, adding that the financial and commercial establishments would eventually benefit from the measure.
The CCTV cameras will be installed on busy streets, areas with high density of crime, as well as sites thick with people around Quezon City. But he declined to name the areas.
He explained that the QCPD Tactical Operations Center would be put in charge of processing and collating the video feeds from the cameras stationed in different areas.
But until then, Gatdula said, the QCPD has to rely on the CCTVs already installed in establishments and to continue dispatching policemen for patrol operations around the city.
