MANILA, Philippines -- Almost a week after Batanes Governor Telesfor Catillejos and his driver were wounded in a roadside ambush in Pasay City believed to have targeted the provincial executive, police still have no leads that could shed light on the case.

In an interview Monday, Senior Superintendent Erickson Velasquez, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-National Capital Region (CIDG-NCR) and head of Task Force Castillejos, admitted they have yet to establish a “strong motive” behind the incident.

On September 3, Castillejos and his driver, Arnold Patimo, were wounded when a gunman shot them while they were on their way to the domestic airport.

Castillejos and Patimo are expected to be discharged from the hospital this week.

National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Director Geary Barias earlier said politics was the main angle being eyed in the assassination attempt. Barias cited a pending case against Castillejos before the Office of the Ombudsman.

But Velasquez said he is “unconvinced” by the political angle because Castillejos has no rival in his province, and “strong pieces of evidence are needed so that the angle of politics can be established.”

Velasquez said they are not discounting the possibility that a traffic altercation triggered the attack and that the actual target was Patimo, because most of the bullets were aimed at the driver’s side of Castillejo’s vehicle.
