Star horseracing jockey hurt in stabbing

MANILA, Philippines -- A horseracing jockey was wounded when he tried to break up a fight at a friend’s house in Makati City early Tuesday and was stabbed instead, police said.
Jeffril Zarate, who is noted in thoroughbred horseracing circles, had to undergo and operation at the Makati Medical Center but has been declared in stable condition, according to police.
Superintendent Manuel Santos Jr., chief of the Makati police investigation division, said Zarate was at the birthday celebration of his friend at Evangelista Street in Barangay (village) Bangkal when a fight broke out between two other guests at around 2 a.m.
Santos said Zarate stepped in to pacify the two but was stabbed.
Although Santos said the suspect remains unnamed, police learned his is the boyfriend of one of Zarate’s friends.
