MANILA, Philippines—Power was temporarily cut off from at least four villages in Quezon City after a passenger jeepney commandeered by a drunken man slammed into an electric post in Cubao Tuesday midnight.
Responding policemen immediately arrested Banjo Gutierrez, 19, shortly after the vehicle he commandeered nearly felled an electric post at the corner of P. Tuazon Avenue and 21st Street.
A report from the Quezon City Police District Station 10 said the incident caused a four-hour power outage in the whole Project 4 area.
Villages in Project 2, Katipunan and Project 3 also experienced brownout, the report added.
According to the report, Gutierrez suddenly boarded the jeepney driven by Jesse Ubani on 13th Avenue at around 11:39 p.m. and ordered the driver to speed up as somebody was running after him.
Gutierrez, who was reeking of liquor, then reportedly grabbed the steering wheel from the frightened driver who immediately jumped out of the vehicle.
As the suspect was escaping, the wayward vehicle slammed into the electric post.
When accosted by policemen, Gutierrez said he went on a drinking spree after his girlfriend jilted him.
Police are readying appropriate charges against the suspect who is now locked up at the QCPD Station 10 in Cubao.
