MANILA, Philippines -- In a bid to address the continuing increase in fuel prices, the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) approved on Wednesday the use of engines that would run on pure liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
LTFRB chairman Thompson Lantion said the agency’s board has allowed the public transport group Pasang Masda to use surplus LPG engines, apart from engines that RUN on 70 percent diesel and 30 percent LPG mix.
Jeepneys plying the SM Fairview-UP “ikot” route will soon be operating on pure LPG engines, he said.
“We should try out all the possible alternatives to fuel for public utility vehicles (PUVs) to solve the unabated increases in the prices of diesel that affect the income of drivers,” Lantion said.
He added that fuel efficient engines are part of the government “rehabilitation program” for the transport sector.
Other transport groups have also been also invited to avail of the 100 percent LPG engines.
