MANILA, Philippines -- Quezon City police are adding another angle, that of insurance fraud, in the burning of a bus of the Victory Liner company Wednesday night.
In a press conference in Camp Crame on Friday, Quezon City Police District chief Magtanggol Gatdula stressed that they were exploring all possible angles in the case.
“We are looking at all possibilities. That (insurance fraud) is one of them,” Gatdula said when asked if the destruction of the bus might have been done to collect insurance.
He added that they have not completely dismissed the angles that a criminal group was trying to extort money from the company or that the arson was the work of disgruntled employees.
But the Quezon City police commander said they were puzzled by a lack of cooperation from the management of the bus company.
“We were told that management is secretive by nature. We are having a hard time investigating the case. Every time we have a development, they just shrug their shoulders and say ‘insurance will take care of that’,” Gatdula said.
He said police were also puzzled why a bus parked at the rear of the company’s garage in Cubao was targeted instead of newer buses up in the front area.
Gatdula also bewailed the lack of adequate security at the company’s garage. “Security was lax. And when something happens, they pin the blame on police. We are not security guards,” Gatdula snarled.
Meanwhile, Gatdula said security agencies of companies as well as the companies themselves should be held responsible if, because of their negligence, crimes are committed on their premises.
He said management should make sure their premises are secure.
Gatdula said in the case of the bus company, its garage was poorly guarded and poorly lit.
