MANILA, Philippines -- A man narrowly escaped death but his companion remains missing after they were swept by floodwaters as they fixed a clogged manhole in Quezon City during a heavy downpour Friday. Eddie Sinco, 38, was rescued by Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) personnel from a creek near Mega (formerly Nepa) Q-Mart public market in Cubao some 30 minutes after he and his neighbor, Luis Bilo, 26, disappeared. Superintendent Oscar Palisoc, commander of Quezon City Police District Station 9, said Sinco was rushed to East Avenue Medical Center where he is being treated for injuries he sustained in the incident. Palisoc said they have yet to recover the body of Bilo. He said the two were contracted by a neighbor for a fee to clean a congested manhole in front their house on 6 Colonel Salgado Street, Barangay West Kamias around 1:45 p.m. Moments after the two went down the six-foot deep manhole, the house's owner heard the thumping sound of the waters. The victims then suddenly disappeared, Palisoc said. “The owner said he did not hear anything from the pair as they just disappeared,” he said. Palisoc said he has deployed a police team to help the MMDA personnel locate the missing Bilo.
