10 hurt as LPG tank explodes in Quezon City--police

MANILA, Philippines – (UPDATE 2) At least 10 people, including a three-year-old boy, were hurt when a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tank exploded inside a house in a slum area in Cubao, Quezon City before Friday noon, police said.

Superintendent Procopio Lipana, commander of the Quezon City Police District Station 7, said four of the injured persons were taken to the East Avenue Medical Center while six others were rushed to Quirino Memorial Hospital.

Citing an initial report from police investigators, Lipana said the explosion happened along Ermin Garcia Street, Barangay (village) E. Rodriguez around 11:20 a.m.

In a separate interview by INQUIRER.net, Police Officer 1 Darius Razon of Station 7 of the Quezon City Police District, said the explosion was caused by a leak in the LPG tank.

A radio report, also quoting police, confirmed this.

The report said two of the victims, a couple identified as Constancio and Russel Franada, bought an LPG tank but noticed a leak in the hose as they tried to connect the tank to their gas range.

The report said the Franadas placed a wet cloth over the source of the leak but that when they used a match to light the stove, the explosion occurred.

Quoting hospital and police authorities, the report also identified some of the victims as Asuncion Odon, Dennis Odon, Sandy Odon, Benita Odon, and Milagros Tamayo -- all confined at the Quirino Memorial; and the Franadas and Maria Cabonce who were brought to East Avenue.
