MANILA, Philippines -- For one minute on Monday morning, there will be no humming of motor engines on major streets in Makati City.
Dubbed "Tigil Buga," the simultaneous switching off of engines will commence at 8 a.m. along Ayala Avenue and other main roads to cap the month-long observance of Earth Day.
At 8 a.m., a long whistle will be sounded to signal to motorists to turn off their engines and pull out the keys.
Similar "Tigil Buga" events were scheduled in other cities -- members of the Council of Philippine Clean Cities Coalition, such as Davao, Baguio, Marikina, Pasig and Quezon City -- but the mechanics of the observance there could not be immediately ascertained.
Danilo Villas, chief of the Department of Environmental Services, said they will also hold a motorcade along Ayala Avenue at around 7:30 a.m. to be participated in by environmentalists, city officials and private-sector partners.
"Even transport groups in Makati City have also pledged their support for this last event in celebration of Earth Day," he added.
Villas identified other "Tigil Buga" areas where vehicles will be encouraged to participate in the activity, such as J.P. Rizal St, Makati Avenue corner J.P. Rizal Street, Kalayaan Avenue corner Reposo; Sen. Gil Puyat corner Ayala Avenue, Sen. Gil Puyat corner Pasong Tamo, Sen. Gil Puyat corner Makati Avenue, and Paseo de Roxas corner Sen. Gil Puyat.
Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay is also set to lead a day-long environmental program at the Glorietta Park 3 after the Tigil Buga event to recognize the city's local greenie partners.
