MANILA, Philippines -- Three police generals who led operations against Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and the Magdalo group who occupied the Manila Peninsula hotel and called for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s ouster in November will receive medals on the 17th anniversary of the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Arroyo herself will award the Medalya ng Kagitingan (PNP distinguished Conduct Medal) on Wednesday to Director Geary Barias, chief of the National Capital Region Police Office; Chief Superintendent Luizo Ticman, Southern Police District director; and Chief Superintendent Leocadio Santiago, director of the Special Action Force, according to a PNP statement Monday.
The officials were cited "for exceptional display of courage and leadership" and for the "swift police action" that quelled the seven-hour take over of the hotel by Trillanes, members of the Magdalo and civilians such as former vice president Teofisto Guingona last November 29, the statement said.
The three police generals were also awarded medals for heroism by Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno and PNP Director General Avelino Razon last year amid criticism from media and civilians arrested after the hotel occupation.
Other policemen to be received awards during the PNP's 17th anniversary celebrations include Chief Inspector Willie Tremposa, who will be posthumously awarded the PNP Medal of Valor for protecting his superior during a shooting at Camp Crame in 2006; Police Officer 3 Roland Baucas of the SAF (bravery medal) for neutralizing Abu Jandal and other alleged members of the Abu Sayyaf who were allegedly responsible for the November 13 bombing at the House of Representatives; and Senior Police Officer 2 Henry Tupas of police regional office 9 for operations to rescue Italian priest Gian Carlo Bossi, abducted in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay on June 10, 2007.
