MANILA, Philippines?Leftist group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) has brought the fight against former military general Jovito Palparan to cyberspace through the social networking site Facebook.
Renato Reyes, Bayan secretary general, said at least 1,100 people have so far joined the cause ?Palparan should be in jail, not in Congress nor any other government office" as means of protest.
Palparan, who is set to take office today as party-list representative for Bantay, was accused of leading extrajudicial killings during his military assignments in 2005 and 2006.
He has repeatedly denied the accusations, noting that those killed were slain during military operations and were members of the communist New People's Army.
The Facebook cause was launched following the Supreme Court ruling that made Palparan a member of the House of Representatives.
Reyes said Facebook members who joined the cause against Palparan include students, artists, activists, bloggers, even soldiers.
?The FB cause...is also a political statement against what many believe is a gross injustice, that a person like Palparan is able to get a seat in Congress even if he doesn?t represent any marginalized sector and despite his involvement in human rights abuses,? Reyes said in a statement.
