MANILA, Philippines--US-based StarTek Inc. has said it will open a call center in the Philippines, marking its first expansion outside of North America.

The company, headquartered in Denver, Colorado, is currently building a 7,200 square-meter facility located in Makati City.

The facility is expected to open in the fourth quarter and initially employ at least 1,100 workers, the company said in a statement.

Larry Jones, president and CEO of StarTek, said the company chose to expand in the Philippines due to its large pool of skilled workers, excellent telecommunications infrastructure and lower costs vis a vis other sites.

StarTek provides customer support services for cable and other telecommunications companies in the US. The company said it operates more than 20 sites in North America.
