TAGAYTAY CITY, Philippines--The University of the Philippines College of Education is gradually fusing pedagogy and information and communications technology.
"Information technology is now integrated in education courses. It is no longer treated as an adjunct course" that focus on skills training, according to Hector John Manaligod, instructional computer systems coordinator and faculty member at the UP College of Education.
Hoping to take advantage of the benefits of ICT in education, the UP College of Education has started integrating ICT in its courses in 2005, as students were encouraged to use web-based tools to collaborate on school projects.
Manaligod said that UP College of Education students are now encouraged to explore and collaborate among themselves using ICT.
Classes in the college now use web-based mailing list services, such as yahoogroups, to extend discussions beyond the classroom.
Asked if UP education students are also encouraged to blog, the UP professor said courses are not yet taking advantage of blogs for publishing lesson plans on the web.
"Blogs remain a personal journal for students," he said.
The College of Education, however, has introduced Webquest to students.
"WebQuest is an inquiry-oriented lesson format in which most or all the information that learners work with comes from the web," the Webquest website states.
"The Internet caters to individuality. In UP, we foster team work and diversity," Manaligod added, stressing that the UP College of Education courses needs to evolve due to changes in technology.
Apart from the integrating ICT in education courses, the College of Education is also training its own teachers to respond quickly to changes in technology.
