HP to launch VMWare-ready servers

MANILA, Philippines -- HP will start selling servers pre-installed with virtualization software from VMWare this April, a local executive said.

HP has announced it will ship 10 models of its Proliant servers integrated with VMWare's hypervisor software called VMWare ESX3i.

VMWare's software creates "partitions" in Intel-based servers, each running either Windows or Linux but using the same hardware. Virtualization, therefore, aims to increase server utilization.

Locally, the early adopters of virtualization are large businesses that run servers in large volumes, according to Veronica Escalante, HP Philippines product manager for industry standard servers.

"The deployments are characterized by intensive capacity planning, designing and implementation," Escalante said via e-mail interview.

By pre-installing VMWare, HP is looking to ease virtualization projects even for smaller end-users. HP said the new Proliant servers enable end-users to deploy VMware's base hypervisor within minutes of booting up.

"With this new announcement (with VMWare), we hope to see an acceleration of adoption of virtualization solutions by the other customers," Escalante said.

HP, however, did not mention price points for the new Proliant servers.
