Comelec lauds confirmation of Sheriff Abas as its new chairman
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday lauded the confirmation of its commissioner Sheriff Abas as the next chairperson of the poll body.
In a statement after Abas’ confirmation at the Commission on Appointments (CA), Comelec spokesman James Jimenez said Abas was “eminently suited to take the helm” as Comelec chair.
“The entire Commission on Elections celebrates the confirmation of the nomination of commissioner—now chairperson—Sheriff Abas,” Jimenez said.
“His assumption to the Chair comes at a most opportune time, as the COMELEC is preparing for the 2019 National and Local Elections,” he added.
Jimenez noted Abas’ “depth of his experience in directly managing critical aspects of both the 2016 National and Local elections and the recently concluded 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.”
With Abas’ confirmation, the Comelec was now left with two vacancies for the position of Comelec commissioner. /vvp
