Today, May 11, is the 23rd death anniversary of National Artist for Visual Arts Jose T. Joya.

Born on June 3, 1931, Joya was a painter and multimedia artist who distinguished himself by creating an authentic Filipino abstract idiom that transcended foreign influences.

He represented the Philippines in the 1964 Venice Biennial. His works such as “Beethoven Listening to the Blues” and “Dimension of Fear” won the admiration of local and international artists.  — Justine Mirandilla
