Professor, ailing man commit suicide at home
DUE to unrequited love and depression, two men took their own lives in separate instances over the weekend.
A university professor shot down the suitor of his ex-girlfriend in front of her boarding house in Nasipit, barangay Talamban, Cebu City and later shot himself on the head in his home in barangay Gabi, Cordova town last Saturday evening.
In barangay Mambaling, Cebu City, a man suffering from heart and asthma ailments hung himself inside his room yesterday morning.
The 30-year-old university professor named Alan Sinugbuhan was with another man when he brought flowers for Decebeth Climaco at her boarding house.
But he was in for a rude shock when he met Climaco’s 26-year-old suitor Archie Ygot.
Climaco said she heard gunfire after Ygot went out of the boarding house.
She ran outside the house and saw Ygot slumped on the ground and soaked in blood from a gunshot wound on the right portion of his chest.
Climaco and her neighbors rushed Ygot to a private hospital in Talamban but he was declared dead by doctors.
Witnesses said Sinugbuhan hailed and boarded a taxi with his friend, throwing away the flowers he brought for Climaco.
Cebu City police arrived at Sinugbuhan’s house and tried to convince his parents to give him up.
However, a burst of gunfire cut short their conversation.
“When we went there (Sinugbuhan’s house), we thought that somebody was trying to shoot us when we heard the gunfire,” PO3 Elmer Baguio of the Cebu City police’s Homicide Section told Cebu Daily News.
They found Sinugbuhan in the backyard lying on the ground with a gunshot wound on the right temple of his head.
Found near him was one .357 revolver and several bullets. He was declared dead by doctors yesterday noon.
Sinugbuhan was positively identified by the witnesses as the person who shot Ygot.
Sinugbuhan split up with Climaco four years ago. Ygot was brought to the St. Jude Funeral Homes in Mandaue City for autopsy.
“Even though Sinugbuhan was declared dead by the doctors, the crime laboratory will still conduct a paraffin test against him. We will submit the recovered firearms to the crime laboratory for ballistic examination.” PO3 Baguio said.
In barangay Mambaling, 34-year-old Arnel Cuizon was found lifeless and hanging on a beam of his home’s ceiling with a blanket tied around his neck at dawn yesterday.
Rey Cuizon, Arnel’s 36-year-old cousin, told the police that he peeped through the half-screened door of Arnel’s house and saw him hanging lifelessly from the beam of a ceiling.
He told Arnel’s sister Cherry Mae Cuizon about what happened and she called the Emergency Response Unit Foundation (ERUF) who declared him dead.
Cherry Mae told police that Arnel was so depressed after suffering from asthma and a heart ailment for nearly a year.
It was learned that he tried to commit suicide last month.
Police said there was no sign of foul play. Arnel’s remains was brought to the Eternal Funeral Homes for autopsy.
