DAGUPAN CITY — A retired Army soldier has shot and killed his son in Binalonan town in Pangasinan province, police said on Friday.

Farmer Aurelio Asimba, 34, died instantly after he was shot three times on the chest by his father, Manuel Asimba, 66, around 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Barangay (village) Mangcasuy, according to Binalonan police Deputy Chief Sr. Insp. Rommel Sembrano.

Sembrano said the shooting was preceded by a shouting match between the father and son. The younger Asimba was drunk and rowdy at the time.

“We were told that whenever the victim is drunk, he goes to his parents’ house to challenge his father to a fist fight,” Sembrano said. This time, the former soldier drew his .45 caliber pistol and shot his son multiple times.

Authorities immediately arrested the older Asimba and seized his gun. Appropriate charges are now being prepared against the suspect, police said.                       /kga
