Canadian woman sues ex-BF after running away with multimillion lottery win

A woman from Ontario, Canada sued her former flame, claiming that half of his lottery win should be hers.
Denise Robertson filed a case on Tuesday against her ex-boyfriend Maurice Thibeault for numerous cases such as breach of trust and deceit, as well as seeking a declaration for winning half of the CAN$6 million earnings, and CAN$500,000 (around P2 million) in damages, local media CBC News reported.
In her sworn affidavit, Robertson claimed that the two of them regularly bought lottery tickets as a couple and “dreamt of winning the lottery together.” She further claimed that it was their habit to split the wins off of their 6/49 tickets.
In the case of the subject lottery win, Robertson heard that the CAN$12 million (approximately P49 million) jackpot had two winners, with one ticket bought from Chatham, Ontario. Since they were from Chatham, she informed Thibeault through text message that they could be among the winners, set to receive half of the pot (CAN$6 million). She said that in his reply, he “made it clear” that they did not win, only for her to find out days later that he had quit his job, packed up and left her.
“He purchased a ticket, he won the ticket, he has claimed the prize. He is a good and honest man and what is at stake here is his reputation,” Thibeault’s lawyer Richard Pollock said in his defense, as per report.
Meanwhile, Robertson’s attorney said that their case is heard best by a jury “[b]ecause it is something that touches on… what the standards of morality are and what the community wants their law to be.”
Thibeault only received half of the winnings (CAN$3 million), as the court is still on the case and is awaiting either a resolution or a ruling. In the meantime, the other half will be handed over to the Ontario Supreme Court. Katrina Hallare/JB
