DID YOU KNOW: 85th birth anniversary of Corazon Aquino

Today, Jan. 25, is the 85th birth anniversary of the late President Corazon Aquino.

The country’s 11th president, the first woman elected to the position, was born in Tarlac in 1933.

In the controversial presidential election in 1986, Aquino led in the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections tally while President Ferdinand Marcos won in the Comelec count.

Nationwide protests against election fraud and the withdrawal of military support from Marcos led to the Edsa People Power Revolution that ousted him from power.

Aquino took her oath of office on Feb. 25, 1986. She died on Aug. 1, 2009, in Makati City. —Marielle Medina
